Equipment

  • Large heavy-bottom pot or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ladle for serving

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for balance)

Instructions

Cook the ground beef

  • Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add olive oil and ground beef. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small pieces while stirring for even texture.

Add onion and garlic

  • Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Stir well and cook for about five minutes until the onion becomes soft, fragrant, and lightly golden in color.

Add bell peppers

  • Add chopped red and yellow bell peppers to the pot. Stir everything together and cook for another five minutes until the peppers soften and release their natural sweetness.

Mix in spices

  • Add chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well so the spices coat the meat evenly, then cook for one minute to release rich aroma.

Add tomatoes and broth

  • Pour in crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Add tomato paste and mix everything well until smooth and thick. The mixture should look rich and well combined.

Simmer the chili

  • Lower the heat and let the chili simmer gently. Cover partially and cook for about one hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and blend all flavors together.

Add beans and finish

  • Add kidney beans and stir well. Let the chili cook for another 15 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding sugar if the flavor feels slightly acidic.

Notes

  • Use fresh spices for deeper flavor
  • Let chili rest before serving for best taste
  • Add jalapenos for extra heat
  • Serve with cornbread or rice
  • Store leftovers in airtight containers for easy meals
