Gluten Free Pizza Dough

Gluten Free Pizza Dough

Preparing a gluten-free pizza crust entails eliminating wheat, barley, and rye, which contain gluten. These grains contain a protein known as gluten, which endows the dough with chewy and elastic characteristics.

In most instances, one requiring a gluten-free diet has to abandon using gluten found in foodstuffs. As I prefer a gluten-free meal, I found this recipe a gem.

It’s easy to make, freezer-friendly, dairy-free, and a family favorite.

How to make Gluten Free Pizza Dough

It’s quite simple to prepare this dough, yet a bit tricky. You just need to set up approximately 15 minutes for getting ready, and then leave the dough for an hour to rise before proceeding.

It will be fairly sticky when the gluten-free pizza dough first mixes together. But you need to add more flour prior to rolling it out, as we want the dough to remain moist and productive during the rising process.

Ingredients

  • Water = ¾ cup + 2 tablespoons
  • Gluten-free, all-purpose baking flour (with xanthan gum) = 2 ½ cups
  • Baking powder = 1 teaspoon
  • White sugar = 1 tablespoon
  • Salt = 1 teaspoon
  • Olive oil = 5 tablespoons
  • Egg = 1
  • Vinegar/apple cider = 1 teaspoon

Instructions for Making Gluten Free Pizza Dough

Step 1

Warm the water using the microwave for 30 seconds, till it reaches an approximate temperature of 110–115 degrees F. It has to be warm enough to stimulate the yeast, but not so hot that it kills the yeast.

Step 2

Pour one packet of yeast and the sugar, mix properly, and leave for five minutes.

Step 3

At the same time, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix them with a spatula.

Step 4

Beat them together speedily with your hand: egg, vinegar, olive oil, and yeast water mix.

Step 5

Mix the ingredients with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until they form a dough-like mass; it’s going to be sticky at this point.

Step 6

To give it to rise, cover with some plastic wrap and a towel, and place at a warm location for one hour. It will be perfect if you place it in the oven as I do.

Step 7

After an hour, get the oven to 425 degrees and allow the dough to chill in the refrigerator for fifteen minutes. Rolling out thus becomes simpler.

Step 8

Spread the dough onto a coated sheet of baking parchment and use a few extra tablespoons of flour to form it into a smooth ball.

Step 9

Use just enough flour to form a ball and make the dough easier to work with; avoid using too much.

Step 10

Now roll the dough with a rolling pin. You may choose one larger pizza or two smaller ones if you prefer a thinner crust. It depends on your preference.

Step 11

Brush the top with olive oil and bake for about 12 minutes.

Step 12

Take it out of the oven, cover it with sauce and the toppings of your choice, then bake for a further 8 to 12 minutes. You can bake it for an extended period if you want it crispier or a shorter time if you want it doughier.

Step 13

From the oven, give it a few minutes to cool, then cut into slices and relish!

Recipe Variations

Honey

You may replace the sugar with honey.

Flour

Chickpea flour, coconut flour, or almond flour can replace all-purpose flour.

Seeds

Ground chia seeds or flax seeds soaked in water may be used as a replacement for xantham gum when added to the dough.

Herbs

Some extra flavor may also be added to the dough with dried oregano, thyme, or any mixed herbs.

Recipe Tips

  • Always prefer to use ‘instant yeast’ for this recipe so the dough may not rise twice.
  • Be vigilant about the temperature of the water you use for yeast. It must not be cool, not extra hot. It must be near about 110 F.
  • Let the dough rise for a full duration of an hour. It will double in size, which means the dough is perfectly done.
  • The addition of Greek yogurt or dairy-free yogurt can provide a bit of tangy flavor and moisture.
  • Cornstarch addition can make the dough stretchy and hold it better.
