Ingredients

  • 35-40 Saltine crackers
  • 1 cup Butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups Chopped chocolate (or your favorite chocolate chips)
  • 1 ½ cups Toppings (chopped pecans, pretzels, or crushed Oreo biscuits)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 300°F.
  • Take a 15 x 10-inch rectangular pan and fix aluminum foil or parchment or butter paper.
  • Arrange the crackers on the prepared sheet in lines in a single layer.
  • Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over the stove, combine butter and brown sugar. Heat this mixture while watching the temperature closely with a candy thermometer. Boil this mixture. Raise the temperature of the mix to 270 to 290 degrees and stay at that temperature for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Drop the mixture over the crackers immediately and then level it out with a spatula.
  • Bake until the candy sets, approximately about 5 minutes. Then take it out of the oven.
  • Microwave the chocolate chips in this timeframe at 50% power in 30-second increments. Cover with caramel that has hardened.
  • The chocolate chips as an alternative can be sprinkled on top of the hardened candy, melted in the oven, and then spread.
  • Using a spatula that has been oiled, incorporate the nuts or other toppings into the chocolate.
  • While warm, cut into squares. Allow it to cool entirely, at least for 15 minutes, and then preserve it in the refrigerator.
