What Will You Love About This Recipe

Every Christmas, I ate saltine cracker candy as a child. Building the cookie tray on Christmas morning has been my favorite activity. To create something best from my grandmother’s baking collection, I  always select Christmas Crack, which comes on top.

The cookie tray is still my favorite holiday custom to this day. It’s mostly linked to the holidays, enhancing its appeal by adding an aura of custom, warmth, and festivity.

It’s an increasingly common choice for homemade holiday gifts or potluck goodies because it’s quick and simple to prepare.

Ingredients

  • Saltine crackers = 35-40
  • Butter = 1 cup (2 sticks)
  • Brown sugar = 1 cup
  • Chopped chocolate = 1 ½ cups (or your favorite chocolate chips)
  • Toppings = 1 ½ cups (chopped pecans, pretzels, or crushed Oreo biscuits)

Instructions to make Christmas Crack Recipe

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 300°F.

Step 2

Take a 15 x 10-inch rectangular pan and fix aluminum foil or parchment or butter paper.

Step 3

Arrange the crackers on the prepared sheet in lines in a single layer.

Step 4

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over the stove, combine butter and brown sugar. Heat this mixture while watching the temperature closely with a candy thermometer. Boil this mixture. Raise the temperature of the mix to 270 to 290 degrees and stay at that temperature for 2 to 3 minutes.

Step 5

Drop the mixture over the crackers immediately and then level it out with a spatula.

Step 6

Bake until the candy sets, approximately about 5 minutes. Then take it out of the oven.

Step 7

Microwave the chocolate chips in this timeframe at 50% power in 30-second increments. Cover with caramel that has hardened.

Step 8

The chocolate chips as an alternative can be sprinkled on top of the hardened candy, melted in the oven, and then spread.

Step 9

Using a spatula that has been oiled, incorporate the nuts or other toppings into the chocolate.

Step 10

While warm, cut into squares. Allow it to cool entirely, at least for 15 minutes, and then preserve it in the refrigerator.

Recipe Variations

Graham Crackers

If you want a more sweet taste, replace the saltine crackers with Graham crackers.

White Chocolate / Dark chocolate

You can use dark chocolate or white chocolate for a less-sweet taste.

Gluten-free crackers

Gluten-sensitive people can replace saltine crackers with gluten-free crackers.

Toppings

Use toppings of your choice. Feel free to top the crackers with nuts, sprinkles, rock salt, etc.

Recipe Tips

  • Chopped bar chocolate may be more effective than chocolate chips. You have two options for melting the chocolate, either use a microwave to melt it and then pour it on top. Or spread the softened chocolate chips with a spatula after scattering them on top of the solid caramel topping and allowing them to melt for a minute.
  • Try toasted coconut, peanut butter, chopped pecans, Oreos, toffee bits, candy canes, or white chocolate toppings. Or just keep the Christmas crack simple!
  • To avoid crystallizing the caramel, use fresh butter and brown sugar.
  • Keep an eye on the caramel while it is baking; the burnt caramel will affect the flavor of your Christmas crackers.
  • Scatter the chocolate chips on over the caramel layer while it’s still hot, allowing them to melt for a minute before spreading.
