- 2 bunches turnip greens
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 1 smoked ham hock
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 cup water
Thoroughly wash the turnip greens, remove any dirt, and cut the stems off of the leaves. Tear leaves into little pieces.
Chop up to half a cup of onions and save. Chop the garlic. Optionally, cook the ham hock or choose other meats such as bacon, chicken strips, or turkey pieces.
Take a pan. Add some oil to that pan and place it on a medium sized flame. Now add the onions and garlic to that and sauté. Add meat in that pan too.
Once the onions are translucent, add the washed and cut turnip greens.
In the next step, add chicken broth and apple cider to that pan too, and stir thoroughly.
Once they are in, add the seasonings like salt, black pepper, and sugar. Adding sugar can balance the salty taste of ham. You can adjust the seasonings to your preference. Start with one tablespoon and add more after tasting it.
After adding everything, now change the cooker settings to manual. Cook this mixture on high heat for almost thirty minutes.
Take everything out into a serving dish. You can add additional black pepper if needed. The Cracker Barrel Turnip greens are ready. Bon Appetit!
